About

Build it. Secure it. Understand it.

OpenEduOps covers open-source learning platforms from their infrastructure to verified operation, including what happens when an instructor publishes a course and a learner uses it.

What this covers

Most learning-platform material stops at the application. OpenEduOps starts where that material stops: the server, the web stack, the database, the certificate, the firewall, the backup, the scheduled task, and the check that tells you when something has changed.

Two platforms are covered. The Moodle Foundation Series builds one Moodle 5.2 environment on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS from installation through securing, backing up, optimizing, and updating it. The Open edX Foundation is in progress and covers preparing a verified Ubuntu host, installing Open edX Verawood with Tutor, publishing a first course that a separate learner can use, sending account email through an authenticated SMTP relay, and migrating course roles to the Verawood RBAC model.

The method

Every tutorial follows the same four moves, in the same order:

  • Make the change. The actual steps and relevant settings, shown clearly.
  • Explain why it matters. What the change affects, and what it costs.
  • Verify the result. Successful execution is not proof that something works.
  • Identify the boundary. The recovery path, and where the guidance stops.

When a tutorial uses reusable commands, its companion guide is published as a GitHub Gist, so those commands stay copyable and correctable without being re-typed from video.

Operational boundaries

A working lab, a public demonstration system, and a production environment are not equivalent, and the tutorials say so where it matters. A single-server build that is correct for learning may be wrong for a service other people depend on: capacity, data protection, change control, monitoring obligations, and recovery targets all change the answer.

Treat the tutorials as practical lab and demonstration guidance. Before applying any of it to a system in real use, check it against your own capacity, data protection, change-control, and recovery requirements.

Scope

This site is a discovery layer for published work. It indexes the long-form tutorials and links to available companion guides. It does not host courses, sell services, run accounts, or collect email addresses. Unreleased videos are not listed here.

Contact and project surfaces

There is no contact form. The public surfaces for the project are:

  • YouTube — where the tutorials are published, and where comments are read.
  • GitHub — where the companion command guides and this site are published.
  • X — short project updates.
